While it was hard to explain what I was going through to my friends while Dad was sick, things were surprisingly a little easier after he died. I didn’t realize it until after it was over, but we had been in a holding pattern for the entire year before. As hurt as I was about losing Dad, as much as I knew I would miss him, on a certain level it felt like a release to not be in that holding pattern anymore.

I think what got me through this time were those landmarks in my life. Things that seemed firm, that gave me perspective. The world felt like it was shifting beneath my feet, and finding something solid to hold on to was the way I kept going.

Surprisingly, school ended up being a big part of that. While I had gotten burned out and jaded after feeling like I sort of missed the program my first few years of high school, I really gave it a go after Dad died.
